First Focus Campaign for Children sent this letter to the original co-sponsors of the Summer Meals Act of 2015 (S. 613/H.R. 1728), Senator Gillibrand (D-NY), Senator Murkowski (R-AK), Representative Young (R-AK) and Representative Larsen (D-WA), to offer our gratitude for sponsoring the legislation and endorsement of the bill. The letter explains the need to better provide meals to children during summer and school holidays, particularly since many children who receive meals through the national school meals programs do not participate in summer feeding programs. The letter then explains how the provisions of the Summer Meals Act would help increase access to summer meals for children, including through improvements to community eligibility and streamlining of administrative process for providers.
