Advocate urges Administration to “protect and support children”

WASHINGTON, February 21, 2023 — In response to the Biden Administration’s publication of a proposed rule that revives aspects of Trump-era asylum bans, First Focus on Children Vice President of Immigration and Children’s Rights Miriam Abaya made the following statement:

“We should not be here again. These measures were wrong under the Trump Administration. They continue to be wrong under this Administration. They violate the plain language of our federal laws and our values. We should not try to control the actions of children and families in desperate straits: As long as families are unsafe in their home communities, they will continue to flee. What we can control is how we respond. Will we act to protect children or not? We urge the Biden Administration to withdraw this rule and instead implement border policies that protect and support children.”
