The Supreme Court ruled this morning that President Biden can end the Trump Administration’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, which forced asylum seekers arriving at the southern border to wait outside the U.S. for their hearings. First Focus on Children President Bruce Lesley released the following statement on the ruling:
“The Remain in Mexico policy subjected thousands of children and families to violence, family separation, and sham immigration proceedings. We are pleased to see the Supreme Court affirm the Administration’s ability to end the policy, which was the right thing to do.
It is important to note, however, this decision does nothing to restore and rebuild our asylum system in a way that honors the hopes of the children, families and individuals who come to our border seeking safe haven. The Biden Administration and Congress must support child-centered border policies that keep children safe, healthy and with their families, and that give them a fair chance to find a new home in the United States.”
