Children’s Week partner Prosperity Now hosted an event on Capitol Hill today to highlight and build support for Baby Bonds and the American Opportunity Accounts Act (known as “the Baby Bonds bill”) nationwide.

Sponsored by Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA-7), the American Opportunity Accounts Act would create a national Baby Bonds program providing every child with an initial $1,000 investment, plus annual deposits of up to $2,000, with the largest amount going to children from the lowest-income households. As adults, participants would use the funds to begin building economic security and wealth through purchasing a home, starting a small business or paying for postsecondary education.

The event featured remarks from Senator Booker and Representative Pressley and a panel of experts including:

  • Kenyan R. McDuffie, Councilmember At-Large, Council of the District of Columbia
  • Dr. Naomi Zewde, Assistant Professor, UCLA Fielding School of Public Health
  • Emily Byrne, Executive Director, Connecticut Voices for Children
