Child Tax Credit, mental health, child care among President’s prominent proposals

In response to tonight’s State of the Union address, First Focus on Children President Bruce Lesley issued the following statement:

“When President Biden rolled out his plan for children in 2021, we called it potentially ‘the most important piece of legislation for children and families, ever.’ We are pleased that in tonight’s State of the Union address the President made clear that he is ready to work with Congress to restore the full Child Tax Credit, ban assault weapons once and for all, establish a national policy of paid family and medical leave, and create affordable child care. We are glad to see the President stand up for the mental health of children, pledge to give them greater access to care, and to hold social media companies accountable for their role in this crisis. We also welcome his push to cap the price of insulin for all Americans, including the 200,000 young people with Type 1 diabetes who need it to survive.

We look forward to working with the Administration and Congress to promote the health, safety and well-being of our nation’s 73 million children. Tonight, we saw bipartisan support to protect senior citizens. We must see the same for our children.”
