This report provides a state-by-state breakdown of the number of children living in poverty by analyzing the 2007 U.S. Census data.
For decades, children in America have suffered higher rates of poverty than any other age group. Since 1974, no age group has had a higher percentage of people living in poverty than children.
Last year was no different. Of all the people living in poverty in this country in 2007, 35.7% of them were children (while children are about 25% of the total population). This is up from 35.2% in 2006. A total of 26 states saw an increase in the percentage of their children living in poverty.
